Legend

Tshombe (1919-1969) founded the "Confédération des associations tribales du Katanga" (Conakat) in 1957. In May 1960, he was elected as the provincial delegate of Elisabethville (Lubumbashi). He became president of the provincial government of Katanga on 17 June 1960. The province declared independence on 11 July 1960, yet he still became Prime Minister of Congo on 10 July 1964, when the secession ended. However, he was dismissed on 13 October 1965 by president Joseph Kasa-Vubu. He sought refuge in Europe after Mobutu’s coup d’état. On 28 September 1966, he was accused of treason on 13 March 1967 and was sentenced to death by default. During a plane journey, he was picked up in Algeria. He went to prison around 30 June 1967 where he died two years later.
