Legend

Gilson tried to paint the various houses that he encountered during his walks. He worked out a sort of fragmentary typology of the dwellings of the Upper Congo. A single aquarelle shows the dwellings of the Upper Congo in Mayala. Apart from several views of the Equator and Bangala, among which a village can be seen where there is a tree surrounded by skulls left on the ground or resting on piles, most of the dwellings are situated in Uele, Lado and Bahr El Ghazal. He often reproduced postcard-size aquarelles as is the case here. Some of these cards bear stamps from Congo Free State, stamped in Buta in 1908, at the end of his last term of office.
