Legend

Like Charles Callewaert and many painters of popular pictures of the European presence in the basin of the Congo at the end of the 19th century, Georges Gilson painted various aspects of the river - calm and agitated waters, waterfalls, rapids, wooded embankments and islands that draw one's attention. He said that he had once painted a view of the Nile when there were grass fires along the river's banks (HO.0.1.1918)
