Legend

This view by Charles Callewaert is an extract from a notebook of drawings and aquarelles entitled "International expedition to the Upper Congo, 1879-1884". Manyanga was the third station founded by the team from the Committee for the Studies of Upper Congo (CEHC) under the direction of H.M. Stanley. It was here that Stanley almost died because of an attack of malaria. The RMCA is one of the only international institutions to keep an important and essential series of images of the bodies that preceded the creation of Congo Free State (the CEHC and the AIC) whether these consist of drawings, aquarelles, paintings or glass plates. Théodore Nilis also painted two large maps of Manyanga.
