Charles Callewaert (°1855 - †1945)
Theme
land transport, travel, exploration and research
Legend
The objective of Callewaert was to describe what he saw. This coloured and badly drawn representation will be of interest to historians and adds to the black and white information provided by photographs and engravings of the journey. Objective elements are mixed with the subjective vision of the author. In this case, a boiler and spare parts are being transported by boat to arrive at the navigable reaches of the river. These are coloured moments in time enabling us to visualise the enterprise that would lead to the creation of a European state in central Africa.
