Legend
During his trip, Léon Dardenne created nearly 300 drawings, paintings and sketches. These charcoal sketches were done with a firm hand and were sometimes embellished with white gouache. His aquarelles are particularly remarkable. However, the oil paintings can be a bit disappointing. He rendered the images by small, thick brush strokes whose spontaneity show that he had the habit of painting in the open air. He regularly sent his canvasses to Belgium. He was afraid that they would arrive damaged because of having been rolled up, still wet, before being sent. He was working under difficult conditions and had terrible bouts of asthma and malaria. Sometimes, if there was no water available, he painted with coffee.
