Legend
The colours of this aquarelle have remained surprisingly fresh and vivid. This is the tomb of chief Yanda at Lutete. In his notes, Callewaert mentions the visit to the tomb of the chief at Ntombi Matakka, accompanied by Nilis and Hanssens: "View of the tomb of the chief. Three stone statuettes have been placed on the tomb representing a pregnant woman on the right, a man exhibiting his genitals in the middle, and a woman giving the breast to a baby on the left. The tomb consisted of four stairs on which European-made earthenware pots had been placed. To the left of the tomb was an earthenware crocodile which was 4 to 5 metres long. The whole arrangement had been placed in a hut" (Callewaert archives, notebook 3, 22-7-1882/25-10-1882, dated 19 August, 1882).
