Legend
The significance of health care increased with the urban development of Matadi in the 1910s, especially because a port city was supposed to engender a greater risk of contamination. On the plateau of Kinkanda, located at a great distance of the city centre and the port, the Compagnie du Chemin de Fer du Congo Belge built a remote hospital complex in 1914. The adjoining church indicates that missionary work and care of the sick still went hand in hand at the time in Congo.
