On his way towards the village of the Katanga chief, Léon Dardenne noted: "As everything has been cleared for planting, there appeared a red wall on the horizon. We finally arrived at Katanga. Here everything is red - earth, houses, even the roofs are covered in dust (...)" (Family archives of the artist, notebook 2, 31.12.1899, a copy of which is in the RMCA).
