Legend

This street scene in Boma, which probably dates from around 1914, depicts the first colonial houses which, although they followed the typology of the first bungalows, were completely made of concrete. The increasing use of this new building material is related to the emergence of a local cement industry in Congo. During the next few years, concrete would also enable the realisation of a type of architecture that was more in line with the building styles that were developed at the time in the mother country.
