After studying medicine at the University of Brussels, Paul Briart went on several trips to the United States before taking part in the Alexandre Delcommune expedition to Katanga (1890-1893). He wrote down many observations in a journal entitled "Expedition to Katanga, Upper Congo by Dr. Paul Briart 1890-1893" which is kept in the RMCA. The journal contains several small ink or pencil drawings on tracing paper. The images relate to tribes and cultures of the regions visited by Paul Briart.
