With its simple geometry and a rhythmic indoor space created by concrete arcades, the Sint-Jean church in Lubumbashi belongs to a new, modern missionary architecture that was introduced in Congo during the Interbellum period, thus replacing the neo-Gothic style that was mainly applied before this time. It was designed by a locally residing architect, Julien Caen, who realised several projects in the late 1920s that still determine Lubumbashi’s townscape today.
