Open vase-shaped drum on a base. The Luba distinguish three types of ‘ditumba’ drums that together form a percussion ensemble that is used to accompany ritual dances. The drums depicted here are respectively the ‘musompola’, ‘mutumbwe’ and ‘dya ndanya’ drums The most conic of the three is the ‘ditumba dya mutumbwe’ drum. The ‘musumpola’ drum has the same shape as the ‘mutumbwe’ but is much larger. A piece of rubber (bulundu) is attached to the centre of the skin. The ‘dya ndanya’ drum is the smallest and can only be played by the leader of the percussion ensemble. What strikes are the various girths that subdivide these drums into various parts.
