Leather trunk. It was part of Henry M. Stanley's travel equipment. A tag glued on the trunk says: "This Portemanteau belonged to H. M. Stanley, it was carried across Africa. It must never be removed from my room and never on any account be used. Dorothy Stanley. Lady Stanley, Richmond Terrace, 2 Whitehall".
This item belonged to the traveller Henry M. Stanley (1841-1904), and is now part of the Henry M. Stanley Collection of Memorabilia, that his son Denzil M. Stanley donated to the Museum in 1954. Along with other objects, it records Stanley's travels in Africa, and the Victorian era.
