This photograph was shot in a studio in Cairo, Egypt, when Stanley was on his way back to Europe, after the Emin Pasha Rescue Expedition. It portrays several of Stanley’s lieutenants during the Emin Pasha Expedition, according to the indication written on the back: “Surg. J. H. Parke. Capt. Nelson. Stanley. Capt. Stairs. A. J. M. Jephson. Cairo. Feb. 1890”.
This photograph is part of an Album kept in the Henry M. Stanley Archives (King Baudouin Foundation Collection held in trust at the RMCA).
