Legend
Eugène Laurent (1858-1905) graduated as a medical doctor from the University of Louvain in 1887. After having travelled in Algeria and Morocco, he decided to leave for the Congo in 1892. He was sent to the Equatorial area in the Congo Free State, fell ill and convalesced in Banana, in Lower Congo. Once he had recovered, he went up to the Bangala district and stayed there until his term of service expired at the end of 1894. Dr. Laurent painted interesting documentary images during his trip. His paintings are somewhat reminiscent of comic strips.
