Like most of his colleagues, Charles Callewaert was impressed by the beauty of the landscapes. His notebook "International Expedition to Upper Congo, 1879-1884" contains several views of the river and the embankments in the area around Vivi. The rivers and waterfalls inspired him. He also painted the rapids of the Lower Congo.
