Legend
H.M. Stanley described the station that he set up in the Congo for the CEHC and the AIC as "semi-military". In the notebook, "International Expedition to Upper Congo, 1879-1884", we can follow the progress of Stanley's expedition up to Stanley Pool, giving us an idea of what the stations in Vivi, Manyanga, Isangila, Leopoldville and Kimpoko actually did. Thanks to other aquarelles by Callewaert, we feel we are there helping set up a Protestant mission in the Lower Congo and contributing to the development of European trade through Portuguese, Dutch and Belgian trading posts which were established a long time ago at Banana.
