Legend
Included the material culture were anthropomorphic sculptures which were particularly interesting to explorers and agents of the CEHC and the E.I.C. These objects of ancient material culture in the DRC can be identified by anthropologists and compared to ethnographic objects in the RMCA collection. To avoid any anachronism, one should compare contemporary objects within a region and culture. However, there is evidence of ruptures and continuity in material culture. Here, the objects are probably unfinished. These do not have vegetable or animal attributes which would give them power and meaning. It is also likely that these attributes were removed by Callewaert so that the sculpture would look like a European work of art. The attributes of Teke objects can be compared in the RMCA collection.
