Legend
This painting of a Teke door seen in Kintamo by Charles Callewaert enables us to visualise an ancient coloured architectural painting at the end of the 19th century. A human figure occupies the centre. The body is stylised and the head disproportionate. A quadruped and geometric designs can also be distinguished. The designs and colours (black, ochre, red, yellow and grey) are a type of communication which conveys a message to whoever knew its meaning. Similar to a painting also done in Kintamo by Edouard Manduau in 1884.
