This young boy of the Lower Congo painted by Charles Callewaert is taking part in an initiation ceremony, that of circumcision. He wears a plant skirt and is covered in kaolin. A similar image is found in the publication by Edouard James Glave, "Six Years of Adventure in Congo Land" (London, 1893, p. 81), with the caption "A boy of the Nkimba" and a text describing what takes place at the ceremony.
