Legend
Liévin Van de Velde entered into the service of the CEHC at the same time as his brother Joseph. The latter died just a few weeks after his arrival in Congo. Liévin Van de Velde maintained relations with many artists of the time (Eugène Broerman, Théo Hannon, Jef Lambeaux, Isidore Derudder, Julien Dilens, Jules Lagae, Victor Reding). He was part of the small company of aquarelle artists and amateur draftsmen of the CEHC together with Charles Callewaert, Louis Valcke, Otto Lindner and Adolphe Nilis. He sent a series of aquarelles to the Association Internationale du Congo. One of them inspired an illustration by the Geographic Movement showing a view of the Congo at Vivi (MG, 10 August 1884, p.38). This is a portrait of Edmond Hanssens.
