Legend
This painting was probably painted in the Congo (here at Leopoldville, an AIC station in 1884). It shows a whip and a hippopotamus hide. In one of his notebooks, Manduau sketched the scene and gave a different version. "Civilisation in the Congo" is a controversial image. It denounces the violence used as a matter of course in the State set up by Leopold II since its creation. This scene was also published in "Le Moniteur du Congo", a weekly publication issued between 27 May and 11 October 1885. A version visibly different from this scene was sketched in ink and can be found in the archives of Edouard Manduau.
