Legend
At the time when Charles Van Bredael was working for Congo Free State in Kasai, Léon Dardenne followed the Lemaire expedition to Katanga (1898-1900) with his artist and painter's equipment. The artist/officer and Brussels painter were brought together in a text published by Le Petit Bleu in 1900. The chronicler demonstrates here the documentary interest of the graphic work by Van Bredael in the Congo. Furthermore, Le Petit Bleu published four sketches by Van Bredael. Pencil sketches such as these can be found in a notebook kept in the RMCA. This drawing, whose meaning is not yet known, continues to be of interest to musicologists.
