Legend
As of the 1910s, hygiene formed a key concept in colonial urban planning. This is indicated in, among others, the network of ruelles sanitaires that were realised in the European district of Lubumbashi. The African domestic personnel, who had modest accommodation at the back of the lot of their master (the boyerie), would transport household waste along these paths before daybreak. Yet, in the evening, this circulation network also enabled informal meetings between Africans.
