This photograph depicts the unknown lead of a company giving a rather dramatic performance for the official photographers of the colonial state. They appealed to the traditions of a group that was called 'Bambuli' and was spread across Maniema and north Katanga.

AU CONGO BELGE. Un danseur de la confrérie des "Bambuli". Cette confrérie a des adeptes dans plusieurs tribus du Maniema et s'étend jusqu'au Nord du Katanga. Les croyances populaires attribuent aux plus éminents de ses membres des pouvoirs magiques, notamment celui d'expulser sans dommage, par une contraction musculaire, les lances et les flèches qui leur pénètrent dans le corps. Certains, appelés "Mwamba", dirigent une troupe de danseurs, et c'est au cours des danses qu'ils démontrent leur immunité en pratiquant sur eux-mêmes de petites mutilations qu'ils guérissent instantanément au moyen d'une poudre appelée "masisi".
