Abraham Ortelius

Legend

In 1570, the Antwerp humanist Abraham Ortelius created his ‘Theatrum Orbis Terrarum’, or Theatre of the World, often referred to as the first modern atlas. This Renaissance-style copper-engraved map represents the sum total of what was then known of the geography of Africa. Coastal regions are shown in much more detail than the as yet little explored interior.
