Nicolas Sanson was the most prominent French cartographer of the 17th century. This map reflects his conception of South Africa and the Congo ; it is one of eight maps of Africa contained in his atlas ‘Cartes générales de toutes les parties du monde’. A very attractive copper engraving, like most of the maps of this period, and coloured by hand.
